First Sunday in Lent

As we journey through Lent, we’ve created a 40 Days in the Desert game to play with kids to learn about Jesus fasting in the desert and combating the temptations of the devil with scripture. This month we’re building each craft for each of the Sundays of Lent on this game board to help dive deeper into the scriptures.

A Message To Parents:

I’m still amazed at how God can take us deeper and deeper into relationship with him every time we pray, read the scriptures, or travel through the liturgical cycle.

My most proficient vocations are producing (educational) reality TV and teaching at the college level. Both can be reduced down to formulas.

In every episode of X show, there are 27-29 beats across 6 acts and a pod buster with each beat 1:00-2:30 each to cover Y story. In every semester of teaching X class, there are 15 course weeks with 3 hours of in class instruction to cover Y book.

It could sound pretty boring, right?

But my job is awesome! It’s not to create a whole new framework. That would be overwhelming, and I’d probably never finish anything. The limits placed on me help me. I can be free to find that AMAZING story and use the tools determined by the network (and a lot of trial and error) to whittle down usually 500 hours of footage or so to 43.5 minutes. It’s to take a topic like “film editing” and help students to find a love for editing, foster their creativity, and give them the tools needed to edit within 45 hours of class time plus assignments.

Likewise, God gives us a framework through divine revelation and his church. We’re not “re-inventing the wheel” to follow Jesus. But how incredibly exciting and individually unique are every one of our vocations and the unique way he calls EACH of us to relationship with him?

How exciting it is to look at the approximately 12.6% of the 365 days of the year we spend in Lent (including Sundays) and ask, “how is God speaking to me THIS year?”
